Those students were among 175 Nebraska students and advisors who attended the 46th National Leadership and Skills Conference, sponsored by SkillsUSA, June 21 - 25 in Kansas City.

Nebraska Career Education on June 10 recognized key education and business and industry leaders at its annual conference in Kearney.
More than 500 career education instructors, counselors, administrators and business and industry representatives from across the state attended the 2010 Nebraska Career Education Conference, an annual three-day professional development conference. The award recipients were nominated by individuals who have worked with them and benefited from their commitment to quality career education.
More than 200 Nebraska students competed with nearly 16,000 other students at the 2010 DECA International Career Development Conference in Louisville, Kentucky April 24-27.
Nebraska students who won first, second or third place honors at the state conference qualified to attend. Overall, Nebraska had eight preliminary finalists, 14 top ten finishers and four international winners. Students competed in the areas of marketing, management, finance, hospitality and entrepreneurship.

More than 200 teachers and administrators will attend the Nebraska Department of Education’s Excellence in Education Conference April 21-22 in Lincoln.
The conference will focus on issues related to improving high school dropout and graduation rates in Nebraska schools. Research shows that preparation for high school graduation, college and careers begins with early childhood education. Research also shows that three indicators can predict student success. Those indicators are good school attendance, appropriate behavior and success in the classroom.

Plank received the award at the annual Nebraska International Languages Association fall conference. The award recognizes world language educators who demonstrate creativity and imagination in their teaching and those who promote the study of world language outside the classroom.

NEBRASKA HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES
OUTSCORE PEERS ON ACT EXAM
Nearly three of every four Nebraska high school graduates took the ACT college entrance exam in 2009 and, on average, they continued to outscore their peers nationally, according to ACT scores released today.
Nebraska graduates scored 22.1 on average compared to the national average of 21.1, continuing the state’s long-held tradition of scoring higher than the national ACT average. Both the state average and the national average were the same the previous year.

SCHOOLS TO RECEIVE $158 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDS
The federal government recently approved Nebraska’s special education policies and procedures for serving children with disabilities, paving the way for the state to receive more than $158 million in federal funds.
Approval of the Nebraska Eligibility Document by the U.S. Department of Education will result in local and state programs receiving $153 million to assist in providing special education services to children and youth, 3- 21 years of age. Nebraska will receive an additional $5 million in federal dollars for special education services for children birth to 3 years of age. These estimated totals include Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) as well as American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) federal funds.

The Nebraska Department of Education’s Nutrition Services office has announced the Income Eligibility Guidelines for free and reduced price meals for persons unable to pay the full price of meals served under the National School Lunch, Breakfast, Special Milk and Child and Adult Care Food Programs.
Participating schools, child care and adult care centers have a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party.

More than 5,400 students from 54 states and territories competed in 91 occupational and leadership skill areas. (Omaha, Neb.) Gov. Dave Heineman today recognized nine Nebraska high school seniors for their academic achievement in earning top scores of 36 on the ACT or a 2400 on the SAT college admissions exams.
The Governor was joined by Roger Breed, Nebraska’s Commissioner of Education, in honoring seniors earning the highest possible composite scores on the exams. The students recognized today are graduating this spring and took their exam prior to the start of this school year.
